First Hand on The Green Edge

We were delighted to feature in an April weekly post by The Green Edge, a newsletter and podcaster tracking new developments in the green economy through the lens of skills.

The article explores the UK food supply chain and its alarming 4.8 million tonnes of food wasted every year. The authors connect the dots between responsible resource use, food consumption and engineering production – themes that are central to First Hand, as well as Enginuity’s Future Skills Hub. Enginuity is a charity committed to closing skills gaps in the engineering sector.

To tackle the issue of overproduction and overconsumption, engineering principles such as lean manufacturing and just-in-time production can help minimise overproduction and resource consumption. Of course creativity, collaboration and managing complexity play vital roles in engineering, enabling innovative problem-solving and improvements in efficiency that help drive and scale the change we need to achieve sustainable practices. That’s where First Hand can help.

The authors Fraser Harper and Michael Cross are participants in the community of practice we’ve recently created as part of the EU Horizon LEVERS project.
